Molly Mariano (Physicians Assistant UPMC), Allie Mariano (RN at UPMC), Melissa Shroy (RN UPMC), Richelle Hivner (RN UPMC), Greg Schell (Police Officer City of Philadelphia)
I know quite a few RNs, millennials that I have seen step up and take extra shifts, work extra hours on the front lines at the hospitals, so fellow RNs with young children and families can spend more time at home and not risk being exposed, and exposing their families. These ‘kids’ grew up with mine as close family friends, and seeing them work tirelessly (albeit they have more energy) has certainly made me proud. They are Molly Mariano (Physicians Assistant UPMC), Allie Mariano (RN at UPMC), Melissa Shroy (RN UPMC) and Richelle Hivner (RN UPMC). Also, My brother Greg Schell is a Police Officer with the City of Philadelphia and has worked double shifts throughout the quarantine.

Jess Minot (RN UPenn Chester County Hospital)
My sister, Jess Minot (RN), is a nurse working in the cardiovascular unit at University of Penn’s Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA. She actually contracted the virus after coming in contact with a patient several weeks ago but is now fully recovered and returning to work next week. I thank her everyday for what she is doing for our patients and we should all be grateful for knowing and having the opportunity to support these brave individuals. Thank you to all who are helping us get through this!

Nephew (Police Officer University of Pittsburgh/UPMC), Brother (Police Officer City of Pittsburgh), Dr. Krista Massarra-Rebo (OB/GYN), Dr. Nuncio Massarra (ER Physician Carlisle)
My nephew and brother are both police officers in Pittsburgh. My brother works for University of Pittsburgh/UPMC and my nephew is with the City of Pittsburgh (graduating in June). Both are healthy, but are the front line of this virus and all the chaos it brought to the city. Not to mention the crazy shifts that they have had to endure. Additionally our two very good friends are both physicians. Dr. Krista Massarra-Rebo is an OB/GYN and her husband, Dr. Nuncio Massarra is an ER physician at Carlisle. We check in with them quite often and so far both are healthy and have not contracted the virus. I can’t imagine the stress of their jobs at this time.

Best Friend (Guard York Co. Prison), MIL (Therapist Local Hospital North Carolina)
My best friend is a guard down at York Co. Prison. They have known cases, but the full crew continues to go in and run their shifts every day. He’s been picking up a lot of overtime to help cover, too, since his wife is out of work right now. One of my MILs is a therapist down at their local hospital in NC and their entire team has been helping out with cleaning, delivering supplies, and other miscellaneous activities that the nurses usually do just to help relieve the burden on their end. They also have confirmed cases at their hospital.

Amanda Thorson (Niece) – CAN with Homeland at Home Hospice
My niece, Amada Thorson, is a CNA with Homeland at Home Hospice. She spends her days traveling across Central PA to nursing homes and private residences to provide care and comfort for patients who are in their last days of life. Adding to her day to day physical and emotional stress, she now deals with the stress of potentially contracting this virus and/or bringing it home to one of her four children. I’m proud of her and grateful there are people like her working to help others while putting themselves at risk.
